Biotech (Futurism Approach) -John Boyd

My art installation is a mural dedicated to making for a more tasteful approach for developing a new Biotechnology building. I believe it will be in our best interest to stylize all departmental buildings no matter what department they may be. I chose a new look for a new Biotechnology because that genre of learning seems to be almost completely detached from art and style. By adding décor for each area of study I believe students will be more inspired to advance in each area of expertise. It’s in the schools interest to attract people to the many different divisions of academia and I’m here to deliver art installations that will do just that. To deliver a mural that I thought would serve this department well I used a design that involves hexagon vectors combined with an actual photo of a cyborg head I found on the internet. Above that I labeled the building using a type face called Harpoon which I have bought full rights to use. The building number was added to a vector smart object I created using the typeface GlacierD, another typeface I have bought rights to. I like to add vectors that have a flat feel to them with actual photographic images much like some of John Baldessari’s pieces but I used my vectors more in the background. John Baldessari is has been a teacher himself for most of his career and I’m sure he would agree that making this campus advertise each area of education would boost the overall moral of the students here at Mira Costa College. This is a necessity for this school’s continuity which is why I’m absolutely sure I should win this competition. -John Boyd

  1. I think it would be a great idea to put artwork specific to each department on the school buildings. If nothing else it would make it easier to find classrooms.

  2. This is the most unusual mural I've seen so far. The biotech font is perfect. Whoever entered this should put his name on it! I'm curious to find out if I guessed right about who did it. - Ginni Kitchen

  5. YEAH this has my vote in the top 3. It feels like very original work and the artist here gave it an original feel. It brings out an iconic "i-robot" feel. Very nice work!

  13. I really enjoy the idea of having something so technological on the outside of the Biotech building, it only makes sense. An image such as this would inspire students to perhaps want to do better, besides it just looks plain outright awesome!
