Public Art Proposal-Chris Locke

This public art proposal is being submitted in an effort to beautify a somewhat neglected portion of the music building on the campus of MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California. The purpose of the project is to provide the building with an identity that relates to its function as well as inspire the individuals that encounter it.

The image, from The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, is very recognizable, but also very intriguing with its eclectic content and broad use of color. The idea of Sgt. Pepper’s being a concept album for the Beatles provides a strong correlation between the mural art and the function of the music building as a home to creativity.

The art of Barbara Kruger was an inspiration for this piece, most importantly her work Another, on the campus of UCSD, which creates,"a space of visual pleasure, comfort, and relevancy".

  1. This is really a great image for this wall. Seeing how it's a art, and music building, I think you nailed it in terms of "this is the music and art building." Good piece.

  2. The bright colors and the huge size of the figures are outstanding. I like the way you wrapped the mural around the side of the building. It would be easy to point a lost student to "the Beatles building." - Ginni Kitchen

  3. I agree! This is the perfect place for this picture. That wall is so boring with nothing on it. It might look better if it were smaller though because as you're walking by that building you could see it much better without having to stand really far back.

  4. This is an interesting piece. There is a lot of color, and I like how it covers more than one wall of the building.

  6. Great job wrapping it onto the side of the building and with the opacity of the whole piece. Really looks like its already been painted on. Got to love the choice of Beatles art as well!

  7. Nice wrap. This is really cool. Think about how many people from around the world would come to see this, if it was really done. Ok you can stop thinking now.

  8. Chris this may be my top pick. Much because it reminds me of my H.S. cafeteria in Queens NY. Very nice choice of iconic legends. It also has a good feel like its been there for some time...
I am liking this because it shows that it also brings people together.

  9. Its great how you used up such a big blank wall with these great big figures. It really reminds me of the huge murals you see in big cities like New York and Philadelphia!
